By integrating Universal Design principles into HKCEC, HML is creating an environment that is accessible for all – and is winning awards for these efforts. At the Universal Design Award Scheme 2024/25, HKCEC received the Special Recognition Award and Gold Award, while the centre’s Congress Plus, a buffet restaurant was given the Silver Award. The awards are organised by the Equal Opportunities Commission, with the aim of promoting the values of equal opportunity, diversity and inclusion.
HML is committed to meeting the needs of different customers and visitors, including people with disabilities. HKCEC provides a number of barrier-free facilities, including spacious passenger lifts and ramps at major entrances and exits to facilitate the entry and exit of wheelchair users and those carrying baby strollers. Tactile flat maps and inductive loop assistive hearing systems are installed at the Harbour Road and Expo Drive entrances. In addition to providing guide paths for the visually impaired at the two main entrances and exits, the HKCEC has barrier-free toilets on each floor.
The AI Life Sense Alert System is installed in all 61 accessible toilets at the HKCEC, designed to ensure that in the event of an accident or sudden illness, vulnerable users can receive help in a timely manner.
